Haiti's problems run deeper than the earthquake!
  • The real disaster in Haiti is as much man-made as the earthquake. After years and billions of dollars of foreign assistance, Haiti remains the poorest nation in the Western hemisphere.

    Aid has enabled the population of Haiti to go from 4 million to 10 million in 50 years. In a country that couldn't sustain 4 million, it's absurd to think that it could, or should, sustain 10 million.

    Any aid to any poor nation, particularly food aid, is merely a Band-Aid that may make the donors feel warm and fuzzy, but it's worse than nothing in the long term.

    Sustainability and population control are the keys to the future of life on Earth, and the sooner we practice that, the better off we will all be.

    Is there really a future for my poor country?

    Haiti will never sustain it self.
    It's always another donors conference begging for more money!

    Shunned, i do not agree with you at all. Haiti can and eventually will sustain itself, they just need a good government. A government that cares for the people, one that does have the mindset of "the rich gets richer and the poor gets poorer"

    "A government that cares for the people, one that does have the mindset of "the rich gets richer and the poor gets poorer"

    Emman, have you not meant to say "A government that doesn't have the mindset of the rich gets richer and the poor gets poorer" instead?

  • emman02136 January 31

    @AfroLatino Ooooppss!!...i meant doesn't
    thnx!

    Haiti had issues before the Earthquake. Haiti is a conflicted country, to say the least. The infrastructure isn't the only issue in need of a makeover... The Haitian mentality is at the top of list! It's unfortunate when bad things happen, the poor tend to suffer the most while the rich is unaffected... I won't make the Earthquake about a poor or rich issue because the country was affected as a whole...

    Government...what government? There is no sort of leadership in Haiti. People want to be leaders when there's no heavy work load and everything is flowing smoothly! But as soon as times get though...there are no leaders in sight! Preval, anyone? His only worry was his "palaceeeeeeee", as he clearly stated on CNN.

    Haiti isn't part of the United States. It stands alone. The international help has no obligations towards Haiti. They do not have to help. And believe it or not, they will not be in Haiti forever. So once the cameras and actual help are gone, who's left? HAITIAN CITIZENS...NO LEADERS!!!

    Haiti has always been on crutches...barely surviving. Now, with this disaster, I believe it has crippled the country completely. Call me harsh or pessimistic...but it's REALITY. Open your eyes and understand what is going on here... Haitians need to help themselves and stop depending on outside help because there's no guarantee they'll come running every time...

    Stand up against CORRUPTION. Pick EFFICIENT leaders. Organize and abide by LAWS. Change your MENTALITY.

    @emman02136
    I am not that into Haiti politics but that government you talk about shouldn't it be made of people who currently have successful business in Haiti for example?
    I posted something here http://forum.koneksyon.com/discussion/comment/6636/#Comment_6636
    Although I was just throwing names out but if someone like Carel was to be in any govt position in Haiti, realistically speaking wouldn't it be another Aristide situation?
    The man just did some reporting an I feel in love with the character and his opinion but this reminds me of titid all over again.
    No offense to Carel if you're reading this

    @ricardopierre

    We'll just keep getting that bandaid over and over again
    I hope the wound heals fast.

    @Merlyndia

    I was in Haiti in december and the only Haitian patriots i've seen were aged folks like my parents and their friends.
    No one in their early 20s or 30s were really interested in Haiti. Every one goes to the beach, has fun, go to parties and life goes on.

    @Shunned

    Now eventually one day I hope it will. However I dont forsee it anytime soon

    Now I did not visit the whole town and met everyone but it was clear not many people cared at all!

    Haiti's problems need to run inside the mind of Haitians
